Kids and Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is a popular place for kids and teachers alike. The Refuge hosts an Environmental Education building where we have held numerous workshops and programs for elementary and middle school students and teachers. Some of the student activites while at the Refuge have included marsh walks, Wildlife Drive and Visitor Center tours, native and invasive plant identification, tree and native grass plantings, and geolocation using GPS. Teachers also participate in environmental education and science workshops for their own professional development.

The Blackwater NWR Visitor Center is home to many interesting exhibits for both young and old, and features waterfowl and raptor exhibits, marsh management exhibits, an observatory area with spotting scopes, and an authentic eagles' nest. The building also has several monitors that show live video from our Eagle Cam, Waterfowl Cam, and Osprey Cams. Ask at the information desk for a copy of the Junior Refuge Manager Field Journal activity book.

The Eagle's Nest Book and Gift Shop in the Visitor Center has a nice selection of nature-related items for all ages and is worth a visit.

Annual events at the Refuge that are attractive to young people include our Eagle Festival and Youth Fishing Fun Day. In addition, during our Earth Day Litter Pickup, we set aside special areas where young people can safely volunteer.
